But the lowest price is not always the best value, and the highest projected savings are not always the most realistic. Whether you are a homeowner, business owner, farm operator, or public-sector buyer, the goal is the same: compare equivalent options before making a major investment. A clear proposal should make it easy to understand what you are buying, what it is expected to produce, and who is responsible if something goes wrong.

How to Evaluate Solar Proposals Side by Side

Ask for at least two or three proposals, then compare them using the same information. Do not focus only on the final price or monthly payment. One contractor may include a larger system, higher-quality equipment, electrical upgrades, monitoring, and a longer workmanship warranty, while another may not.

Create a simple comparison sheet for each proposal. Include the system size, estimated annual production, total cash price, financing terms, equipment brands, warranty coverage, installation timeline, and any exclusions. This keeps a polished sales presentation from distracting you from the numbers that matter.

Ask for the full cash price, the financed amount, interest rate, loan term, dealer fees, monthly payment, and total amount paid over the life of the financing.

Buying a system generally gives the property owner access to available tax incentives and the long-term value of the energy produced. A lease or PPA may reduce upfront costs and shift some maintenance responsibility to the provider, but it can limit incentive eligibility and complicate a future property sale.

For a business, farm, or institution, evaluate solar as a capital decision rather than a monthly-payment decision. Consider estimated utility savings, tax treatment, depreciation where applicable, incentives, maintenance costs, and the expected payback period. Verify Incentives and Savings Claims

Federal, state, local, and utility incentives can significantly affect solar economics. A good proposal should identify which incentives are included in its numbers and clearly state the assumptions. It should not treat an incentive as guaranteed if your eligibility, tax liability, project timing, or utility program status could affect the result.

Ask whether the quoted price is before or after incentives. This simple question prevents confusion. A proposal showing a net cost after a tax credit may look much less expensive than another quote showing the full installed price, even if the second contractor is actually offering a lower project cost.

Savings projections also depend on future utility rates. Contractors often use an annual utility-rate increase to estimate long-term savings. Higher escalation assumptions create more impressive lifetime savings. Ask what rate increase was used and request a conservative scenario. Look Closely at Equipment and Design

Panel efficiency can be useful when roof space is limited, but the highest-efficiency panel is not always the right choice. A slightly lower-cost panel may deliver better project economics if you have adequate installation space.
